Dear readers,
Safety is one of the core values of Mercedes-Benz. It was for the founding fathers of Daimler AG too: Shortly after inventing the automobile, Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler set about to design more and more safety into the vehicles they developed to allow them to serve their purpose of overcoming distances, bringing people together and transporting goods safely and reliably. The first Mercedes presented in 1901 is to this day an example of outstanding safety. It has design features which still can be found in state-of-the-art vehicles, for instance the low centre of gravity or the slanted steering column.
Since then, safety engineering had made tremendous advances. In the 1940s an employee of the then Daimler-Benz AG, engineer Béla Barényi, formulated the first fundamental principles for a body with crumple zones. As first car make Mercedes-Benz introduced the concept to series production in 1959, and after that it gained acceptance as industry standard in the entire world. In the same year Daimler-Benz AG began conducting systematic crash tests to improve the crashworthiness of the vehicles. It is these efforts in conjunction with numerous details that go to make the safety one expects of a Mercedes-Benz. This includes, for example, impact-absorbing surfaces in the interior, the fuel tank protected against collisions, assistance systems like the anti-lock braking system ABS or the Electronic Stability Program ESP®, the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, and a great many other innovations. One could go on almost endlessly with the list of trailblazing innovations invented, developed and first marketed by Mercedes-Benz. Each new model series proves that a Mercedes-Benz always reflects the highest levels of safety.
After successfully working on behalf of occupant safety, i.e. passive safety, in future Mercedes-Benz will focus more than ever on the avoidance of traffic accidents, i.e. active safety, and the reduction of the severity of accidents. The dozen or so newly developed or enhanced driver assistance systems which are being used first in the new E-Class and S-Class play an important role in this effort. This unrivalled interplay of highly advanced safety technology broadens the “senses” of the automobiles and increases their intelligence. It makes them “thinking” partners that can see, feel, react reflexively, and act autonomously in order to support the driver actively in critical situations. And so they come closer and closer to the vision of accident-free driving which Daimler AG has consistently pursued for many years. For as rich in innovations as the safety record of Mercedes-Benz may be: We will make the car of the future even safer.
